I want to share with you by my journey with my spine cord injury.
I had spinal cord injury at the C3-C4 level as well as a large disk herniation at the same level, I had surgery on 4/22/14 for a C3-C-4 anterior cervical discectomy with fusion and plating at C3-C4.
From rhe beginning I remember few months before I got surgery. I was barely have hard time to stand or walking. I fell few times cause my spine bruise. I don't know why. My mom noticed my right arm was not used to signs anymore. I went to see doctors. I was sick. they don't know that I had SCI. Until I see a champ neurosurgeon for spine. it changed my life and my family life too. other doctor tap my knee but not move it. he refer me to see neurosurgeon. he order the x-ray and saw spine bruise. he needed me to get my surgery quickly before get worse. Other doctors were saying no....
my mom fought to get approve from doctors to get surgery at Carolinas medical center in Charlotte, NC/ I remember my mom and Grammie drove me there on April 22, 2014 for a surgery. after that few days later I woke up. I was confused, mind was not clear and seeing family and friends who visit. I got food in my lungs to become pneumonia. so I got tube feeding in my nose for few days while my lungs got healing. Few days later I transferred to the Carolina Rehab hospital. I met wonderful doctor, PT, OT and CNAS. they are so nice and friendly/ It make my inner peaceful. I had stayed there for 4 months. I work so hard to be stronger again. it was so painful in right arm because wake the nerves up. The OT put the soft brace on arm to help straight and stretch it.
I taught CNAS how to use Sign Language. I got along with them. My mom was crying and say soo sorry what happen to you. I used to use right arm when I grow up. I had learned to use the left arm and hand to feed and use sign language,
after 4 months at rehab hospital I got discharged. I lived with mom for a year and it was so challenged for us because I need more help. we were lucky to have wonderful Caregivers to help.
2 CNAS from rehab hospital to help us at home. They are wonderful people and experienced to work with people who has disabilities before.. plus one is deaf caregiver. she is really funny. it help me to laughed a lot and cope with my SCI. I fell down few times because the nerves were not working. we call a firefighters to lift me up to the wheelchair few times. Some ate handsome.
It was becoming a friendship with cnas. I will never forget that in my heart.
HUGE thank you Aunt Amy and personal trainer Calvin to help my body stronger.
